SASKATOON RESIDENTS RATE THEIR CITY HIGH IN IPSOS REID SURVEY
Saskatoon is a great place to live according to 94% of residents, 90% think it’s a great community in which to raise a family, and another 89% of residents think Saskatoon is a great place to invest. These are just a few of the things Saskatoon residents are saying about our community according to a new Ipsos Reid study entitled “Canada’s Pulse 2011.”
Conducted on behalf of Global Television, the online survey polled 6,883 Canadians, 408 of which resided in Saskatoon, between August 26 and September 1, 2011.
In addition to asking residents about their city and life in Saskatoon, the survey also touched on topics including local issues facing the community, jobs, use of technology and social media, and even asked residents to rate the performance of various municipal officials.
In all but a few areas, the results for Saskatoon are positive. Two-thirds of those polled approve of the performance of both His Worship Mayor Donald Atchison and City Council, and almost 80% feel that overall, Saskatoon is on the right track.
“While we obviously cannot rely entirely on the results of surveys like this to gauge what the residents of Saskatoon think about our community and our performance, we are pleased to know that most people are happy living in our community,” says City Manager Murray Totland.
“We can, however, add these results to the other feedback we received through the Civic Services Review and the Saskatoon Speaks visioning exercise to really learn about what the citizens of Saskatoon think, and to use what we learn to do better, to set higher standards for our City, and to work harder to achieve our goals,” Totland adds.
While access to healthcare, the state of the economy, and taxes appear to be less of a concern for Saskatoon residents, there are some areas in which residents feel improvements are needed.
Infrastructure, such as roads and bridges, is the number one concern to 31% of citizens, and another 18% said that to them, crime is the most important issue facing the community. “Crime continues to decrease in Saskatoon with the help of our citizens, Crime Stoppers (a volunteer organization), and our police service. Good infrastructure is a critical component of our community and we need to consistently improve the condition of our streets, back alleys and parks,” said Mayor Donald Atchison.
